QUEEN OF BAIL at COURT

Part of my service to my clients is being with them in court as opposed to them having to go alone. Sometimes family members are out of town or cannot get a day off of work. I am honored to be there for my clients because this means they have the utmost trust in me as their bail agent.
Now, we all know I've had my run-ins with Sheriffs, and I'm pretty sure everybody knows that I am not their biggest fan. With that being said, let me make it crystal clear I have no problem eating some humble pie when needed to get what I want. Also, I must make it be known that my theory is that with politeness, being professional, and not using any profanity is the only way to get what you really want. That's not to say that I have never told a client or Sheriff exactly where they could go.... But I guarantee you I needed nothing from them when I said it.
Today's client was a first time offender. The family and defendants goal was to have the felony reduced to a misdemeanor, and the ability to make payments on the restitution fees. The normal procedure is the public defender comes out, calls his clients name, a brief meeting (with the defendant and typically at least one family member, friend or spouse) is had.  It is safe and plausible to suggest the possibility of a question or two may arise.
The public defender comes out sees me standing next to my client, doesn't ask who I am and says "you're not allowed to be in this conversation you will have to wait over there." No hello, no introduction, no handshake, no professional courtesy whatsoever. OK fine, I proceed to introduce myself politely and say I am here as a courtesy to my client, unfortunately his legal guardian could not be here and I am here to advise. He raised his voice in the court room and said "no, you're not allowed to be here you're disrupting this court room and you are not allowed to be here and I am his attorney and I have attorney-client privilege."  Again politely, I said sir, could you please lower your voice I'm only trying to save you some time of having to explain the scenario twice. He said I'm not explaining anything to you, he said you're not allowed to be in this conversation and you need to leave! At that point I looked at my client and I said let's go outside and talk for minute. This enraged the public defender so much that he yelled out for the bailiff to come over to where we were standing. Again he yelled " I'm his attorney" and I said you're his public defender and we are eligible to receive another public defender if we feel necessary. The bailiff asked what was going on, the public defender said I need her removed from the court room. My client and I had already started walking out of the court room. The bailiff could see that the public defender was the only one yelling and the only one riled up. The sheriff was actually quite cooperative with me and I calmly explained to him that typically nobody has any kind of consultation with an attorney on their first criminal court case ever without somebody there with them and that it is the adviseable thing to do. The bailiff agreed, and totally understood. Since the attorney would not discuss anything with me I had to instruct my client what questions to ask the public defender. Which he did. We then go sit in the court room chairs. The bailiff then comes up to me and says may I speak with you for a moment, I said sure. We walk to the back of the court room and he said to me I'm sorry ma'am I'm going to have to ask you to leave the court room on the request of the attorney. I very calmly and politely said oh sheriff I'm so sorry I'm unable to comply with that request. I said I have client privilege as well, as he's out on my bond. I have every right to be here.
The sheriff bailiff could not argue with that, and said let's just keep it cool and I said of course. Again the sheriff was cooperative and nice with me. The public defender did some good, but ignored my clients need to make payment installations and my client is now is behind the eight ball. I'm sharing the story with you for many reasons. The first reason is to know that you are not stuck using a public defender that is a total and complete rude jerk! It turns out that he treated everybody the same way and would not discuss matters with anybody other than the defendant. You could see every defendant brought a husband or a wife or a friend. A public defender can be fired and another public attorney will be assigned to you and if you don't like that one he can be fired as well! The other thing that is so important here is to never let yourself be bullied by a suit, or a badge. This has no contingency on what color my skin is, or what I'm wearing, it's all in how you handle yourself. This may sound entirely frustrating to you, but to me it gets a big eye roll because it's so common. Court rooms are filled with puffy chested attorneys, district attorney's, public defenders, Judges,  bailiffs, Sheriffs and defendants too! Know your rights, have my number ready. Call me if you need me. If I don't have the answer, I can get it for you. Never get caught slippin! Thank you for taking the time to read my blog.

QUEEN OF BAIL 2015

What friends mean to me... There's an old saying that says if you can fill one hand with the count of your friends you're a lucky person. I agree with this! In the harsh world we live in, its easy to say how many people are fake, or phony. In bail bonds it's very easy to think this way. I think it's just as easy to say how many good people there are, loyal people, plain old good solid people.
The month of January has been chuck full of birthdays. I was very touched to have been invited to many birthday parties. They were all very important to me, & I didn't miss one!

RAQUEL QUEEN OF BAIL

In over 9 years in bail bonds there's one thing I've learned. Everybody will screw me over. Everybody. Especially "friends". Unfortunately this is the nature of my career. Sad but true. When somebody is in jail, they will promise me their first born child to get out. Then once they're out they don't know me. Their phone is turned off & they don't know me. So please understand that I'm not in business to do favors for friends. Business is business. You pay and THEN you get out of jail. Not the other way around. Especially if you're not employed & I don't know where you live. It's not a position I want to put myself in. This makes one realize who their peers are. If not one if your friends will put up money to bail you out of jail... Time to get new friends. This is why RQOB's mantra is "DONT GET CAUGHT SLIPPIN"...

Jury duty.... Nobody likes jury duty. The key word is "duty" it is part of our community duty & part of our constitutional rights! My recommendation is to do it! Here are some good reasons to give it a whirl.
Become familiar with court procedure.
Get rid of fear & intimidation of court.
Learn about law & what is against the law & what is legal.
Learn & see first hand how attorneys & public defenders conduct business.
See what the consequences really are !
You never know how interesting a case can be.
I know some people find it inconvenient but wouldn't you have loved being on the jury for Michael Jackson or Dr. Kavorkian?
Be safe & don't get caught slippin!

QUEEN OF BAIL

Bail Bonds isn't easy. It's not for everybody. It takes patience, and certain kind of "know how"...
I can only very carefully suggest things to an already very stressed out parent. This isn't easy especially when I'm the same age as the kid in jail.
Drug addiction has it's traits. Specific traits to each drug. I had a parent call me so frustrated and so confused. I knew immediately what drug her son was on.
Her description told me, & then I bailed him out from jail. I promised the mother I would wait for him and take him home. I wasn't wrong...
I always have many resources at my fingertips. Rehabs, sober living, court approved drug classes, ankle monitors, counseling.., please always feel free to call me for help. Stay ready and Don't get caught slippin!

RAQUEL QUEEN OF BAIL BONDS

Networking & progress go together! RQOB  is always looking for new opportunities. They don't come to me, I go out and make them. I reach
out to people, and many times I've been rejected or ignored. These things don't phase me. It's not personal it's business.
BUT... Sometimes,...I nail it. I'm grateful to the many many people that have not ignored or rejected me & my business. Bail Bonds has a stereo typical stigma. However keep in mind bail is our constitutional right. Anybody can accuse another person of a crime & that person can get arrested unjustly. I like to think of bail as a way to not let a bad day or an isolated incident ruin your career. Or an opportunity to still make your kids game. I see it as a second chance. Here is a picture of a new business associate of mine. I live & breath RQOB!

RAQUEL QUEEN OF BAIL

Super Bowl Sunday is like a national holiday. Lots of partying and drinking. Please be safe and have a designated driver. Today is the most popular day for domestic violence calls. People don't realize that if the police are called on a domestic violence, SOMEBODY is going to jail. GUARENTEED.
Domestic violence bail is always $50,000 it's not specific to an individual.
Have fun today & don't get caught slippin !

QUEEN OF BAIL

Yesterday I went to Chase Bank on Sunset in West Hollywood.
Maybe it's just me but coming out to this freaked me out!
I decided to take a picture to record how aggressive this behavior was.
The second I pull away the cops are right behind me.
My stomach was turning. Yet I know I'm legal as a beagle!
I drive off and boom they're still right behind me. I knew I was getting pulled over.
So instead of waiting to get "lit up" .. I just pulled over.
This probably didn't make them happy either.
They said I was "acting suspicious"
Then they run my lisence and after 15 minutes the sheriff comes back and asks me if my lisence is real.. (Please)
Then he says I have a "no bail warrant"...
That's when I had to say what I do for a living. I had to let them know I deal with them ALL THE TIME.
I also had to let him know there is no way I can have a warrant or a felony & be a bail agent.
He said there's a no bail warrant with only one digit different on the DL #..
Well if it's different then it's not me is it?
This cop could of easily arrested me, had me post bond, and have it all be for nothing. I'd have a court date as well.
This happens to people ALL THE TIME.
My stomach was turning throughout all of this. I thought to myself who would I call for bail? I cannot bail myself out of jail!

RAQUEL QUEEN OF BAIL

Yesterday I had a bond in Riverside. I haven't done a bond out there in years. I don't advertise out there, because who wants to drive to Riverside in the middle of the night? My initial call to the Riverside Sheriffs Dept, DID NOT GO WELL.
I decided to drive to riverside myself since it was only 2:30pm.
I met with a very nice family, did the paperwork & headed to the Riverside Detention Center.
I made sure to call again and get the bail information twice. I even told the jailer "I'm here from Los Angeles County".. They understand a mistake means a situation. I can't exactly just drive to my office to remedy a problem.
Writing a bond is like writing a check. If you mess it up, it must be voided. The only difference is you CANNOT, cross something out & initial it.
Yours truly, sober as a judge, in no rush, under no pressure & under calm quiet conditions managed to screw up the date on my $50,000 bond. I was freaking out. I thought they would not accept it.
I waited for approval. I waited for two hours.
The jailer deputy comes out, doesn't even mention the date, and says " there's a problem"...
They didn't accept the penal code of 273.5  (a). They wanted it to look like 273.5 A. See the difference an "A" or an (a)....
I explained the situation to the jailer and he was very understanding, asked some questions about who issues the bonds & said he would ask the supervisor for approval. I waited. I waited another hour and a half.
They accepted it.
I was so relieved. I must be fair & say that they were very nice to me. I hated the sheriff that initially spoke with me on the phone, & cursed the very existence of all sheriffs & the whole department.
I laughed as I left Riverside & told the sheriff at the front desk, " I take back everything I ever said about you"..haha!
Again, I must be fair and mention for every bad egg there is a good one. I got home at 10 pm & made dinner.

Los Angeles and surrounding counties is living in the jungle. Violent crimes are down by 12% but hit and runs are up by 100%. Watching the news is always alarming. Stay safe and stay ready! This is Los Angeles.

VAN NUYS JAIL

Doing a bond at Van Nuys Jail is always a smooth process. Even if they're busy they have their jobs down pat. Van Nuys jail is not small, & it's seen almost every notorious criminal throughout history, including many celebrity's.
In the very large area of the San Fernando Valley there used to be many local city jails that housed inmates. Now the small city jails still exist, but they no longer house the inmates. They all go to Van Nuys now. Maybe that's bad for people but great for me to get you out fast. I'm 15 minutes away from that jail, they know me there & treat me with cooperation & respect. I have never had a hard time with the Van Nuys Police Station.  I hope you never end up there, but if you do, stay ready and call your Bond girl!

HOLLYWOOD QUEEN OF BAIL

Going to court is awful to say the least. Your heart is beating, your hot, it's nerve wracking. To me traffic court is worse, but to my clients a criminal case is the norm.
One if my clients case's shows how the budget cuts are effecting some of our lives.
A Hollywood arrest should go to Los Angeles court right? Right. Well due to budget cuts cases are being shuffled here & there. Paperwork is getting lost, & files are sitting in a pile on someone's desk.
The domino effect of this effects me. In turn it effects my insurance company . I can't imagine anyone being effected in a positive way due to this. For me, it's a huge inconvenience. I hope things get better for the Los Angeles Superior Courts.
