As a bail agent, my job is get people out of jail. It is not my job to judge people on what they allegedly did to break the law. This is a tight rope to walk believe me, many crimes come with horrible stigmas and I'm always aware of what the charges are for each person that I bail out of jail.
This brings up the topic of domestic violence which is all over the headlines this week with the NFL and the football player that was caught on video knocking out his wife in the elevator.
I have bailed out many people both male and female on Domestic violence charges. Anybody who's close to me knows that one of my favorite bonds is domestic violence and to speak it and to actually hear me say it sounds horrific. It's a joke it's an inside joke because to me I know for a fact that every single domestic violence charge that I have dealt with has always been a case of too much alcohol, too much yelling, neighbors calling the cops. My clients consistently end up regretting the incident very much and have much remorse to the repercussions that occur in the event that law-enforcement is actually called.
It's my favorite bond because I know that these couples are not criminals, for them to be able to afford bail I know they're employed and responsible. I also know when I see the supposed victim I never have seen one black eye or one scratch or one bruise. If I did I think I would feel very horrible.
I explain to my clients that when the police are called on a domestic violence charge somebody is guaranteed a trip to jail. Laws had been decided that a separation is definitely needed in the event of a domestic violence call in leu of what happened in the O.J. Simpson case with Nicole Brown Simpson.
I have always been a firm believer that victims of true domestic violence are in severe amounts of fear and emotionally distraught and they are not the ones calling the police on domestic violence.
The battered spouse syndrome is very real and I think it's very apparent in the media today with Rice's wife standing firmly behind him.
I sincerely hope that the both of them seek intense therapy, counseling, and all forms of treatment available to them.
Although it took the NFL brutal evidence to do the right thing and set an example, it is still good that they did the right thing. It shows children today that it is unacceptable behavior and you will not be rewarded with $4 million dollar contracts when you hit a woman.
